Odense has been quietly reinventing itself — the old motorway through the middle gone, a new light-rail tram running, and a walkable, green centre built around the Andersen quarter’s crooked cobbled lanes and pastel houses. It’s a city that feels like a large town in the best way: cultural and connected, but unhurried. For UK families used to commuter-belt life, it’s an easy place to breathe out.
Space, gardens and easier moves
The big practical difference from Copenhagen is the housing. Funen is full of detached and semi-detached homes with gardens — parcelhuse and villaer — rather than fourth-floor walk-ups. That usually means a driveway to back onto, a garage and a shed in the mix, and a more relaxed delivery day. Around the city, villages like Årslev, Blommenslyst and the coastal spots towards Kerteminde and Bogense draw families wanting a bit more countryside.
Across the whole island
Funen is more than Odense. We move down to Svendborg and the South Funen archipelago with its sailing and its islands, west towards Middelfart by the bridge, and out to the smaller towns that ring the island. Because Funen is compact and mostly low-rise, the last mile is rarely the headache it can be in the capital.

You’ll register for a CPR number at the local Borgerservice once you’ve an address, and while Funen’s housing costs are kinder than the capital’s, a rental deposit is still standard. Odense hits a sweet spot: a proper city with jobs, schools and culture, but calmer and more affordable than Copenhagen or Aarhus, with more space and more houses with gardens. For families moving from the UK who want room and a gentler pace, Funen is a natural fit — which is why a lot of our Odense loads are full family homes.
Can you handle a detached house move with a garden and garage?
Absolutely — that’s the typical Odense move. Funen has far more detached houses (parcelhuse) and villas than the apartment-heavy capital, so deliveries here often mean a driveway, a garage and a shed to empty as well. Easier access than a city-centre flat, and we plan for the extras.
How do you reach Funen from the UK?
Funen is the island in the middle. Coming by road up through Jutland, we cross the Little Belt Bridge (Lillebælt) onto the island — no need for the longer Great Belt crossing to Zealand. It’s one of the more convenient regions to reach on the corridor.
